Baffles are T-shaped or elbow-shaped fittings inside your septic tank at both the inlet and outlet pipes. They serve a critical function: they direct incoming wastewater downward into the tank (so it doesn’t disturb the settled sludge layer), and they prevent floating scum from escaping out of the tank into the leach field. Without functioning baffles, solids and grease can pass directly through the tank and clog or damage the leach field — one of the most expensive repairs a homeowner faces.

In some cases, an inspection camera is used to confirm baffle condition without a full pump-out.

This is one of the most cost-effective repairs in septic maintenance: a $200 baffle replacement can prevent a $15,000 leach field failure.
