Most older septic tanks were installed with the tank lids buried anywhere from six inches to two or more feet below the surface. Every time you need a pump-out, the pumper has to dig to find and expose those lids — which adds time and cost to every service visit. Riser installation solves this by extending the access point up to or just below ground level, so future pump-outs only require lifting a surface cover rather than digging.

Risers are typically made of concrete, polyethylene, or PVC. They’re installed on top of the existing tank lids or access holes, extending vertically to just below or at grade level, and capped with a removable lid that can be locked. A properly installed riser system makes your tank accessible in a few seconds rather than 20–30 minutes of digging. This typically reduces pump-out costs going forward, since you’re not paying for excavation labor each time.

Installation involves locating and exposing the tank lids, removing the existing lids or cutting access holes if needed, attaching the riser sections, and backfilling around them. The top cap should be secure and ideally lockable — this keeps children, animals, and debris out of the tank. Most tanks have at least two access points (one over each compartment for two-compartment tanks, or inlet and outlet lids for single-compartment tanks). Installing risers on all access points is generally worth doing while you’re already paying for the excavation.

The cost is typically $200–$800 depending on the number of risers, the depth of burial, riser material, and whether the work is done during a pump-out (which reduces labor cost) or as a standalone job. This is one of those upgrades that pays for itself over the first few pump-outs and makes life significantly easier for both you and the pumper. It also helps during a Title 5 inspection, since the inspector can access all components without excavating.
